Sonora Winds – Tucson’s Community Wind Ensemble

Rehearsals:

The group rehearses Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30PM in the Catalina High School band room from August through May. We typically have four concert cycles per year with around four to five public concerts per year.

For all Sonora Winds musicians (current, returning, and new members), seating and placement is at the discretion of the directors.

Current Instrumental Openings:

  • Alto Sax
  • Bari Sax
  • French Horn (low part)
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Percussion

Audition Information:

We are interested in musicians who possess both competency on their instrument and the ability to build rapport and community within our group. If you are interested in joining our ensemble, the selection process for bringing in new members follows these steps:

  1. Please email Co-President: Ken Wilson (kwilson62081@gmail.com) with the following information: your name, primary instrument and part typically played by that instrument (e.g., 3rd clarinet, bass trombone, 1st trumpet), and a brief background of your music experiences/background. If we have a need for your instrument and it seems like your background fits our general level of competency needed for success in our ensemble, the president will invite you to sit in on a rehearsal.
  2. The new member is invited to attend a rehearsal and sit next to the section leader and play the part that is best for the group and appropriate to the member’s level (3rd clarinet, 1st trumpet, 2nd flute, etc.).
  3. After the sit-in rehearsal, the section leader will speak with the directors and provide feedback.
  4. The directors will inform the new member if they can join Sonora Winds before the next rehearsal or if they have been put on our sub list.
